Brewer: Saint Louis Woman. Kirt Pavitt, piano. A celebration
of the artistry of Saint Louis's own Christine Brewer, this
is also a recording of and about music in Saint Louis. Christine
follows in a line of great St. Louis singers including Grace
Bumbry, Jean Madeira and the "Saint Louis Woman"
herself , Helen Traubel. Her vocal gifts most nearly resemble
Traubel's, and she is often compared to that legendary soprano;
it is exciting to hear a new Traubel at the beginning of a
great career. It is fair to say that you haven't really lived
until youve heard Christine and Kirt in three songs
from Harold Arlen's Saint Louis Woman with lyrics by
Johnny Mercer: "Come Rain or 'Come Shine", "I
Wonder What Became of Me", and "I Had Myself a True
Love". Recorded at the Sheldon Concert Hall, Saint Louis. |
