Building an Interdisciplinary Curriculum through Opera
Music!Words!Opera! Camp

Sponsored by the Stupp Foundation, Music!Words!Opera! is an introduction to opera for more than 60 St. Louis city, county and Illinois elementary and secondary schools, which demystifies the art form by relating it to curriculums in history, literature and other disciplines. The program culminates in an opera production written, produced and performed by students -- a creative outlet as valuable for self-discovery as it is for its final product. Class work is enriched by visits from professional composers, artists, storytellers, stage directors and docents; classroom teachers participate in an intensive summer enrichment and training workshop conducted by national trainers, and are eligible for graduate credit from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Opera Theatre helped pioneer Music!Words!Opera!, which was developed under the aegis of OPERA America and is now in place in hundreds of schools across the U.S. Its sequenced resource materials present opera as something everyone can understand and enjoy. The textbooks are divided into two sections; "Listen and Discover" introduces students to operas chosen for their appeal to children of a particular age, and "Create and Produce" involves students in writing and performing an original opera with story and music of their own creation. This program is for students in grades K - 12. In addition, teacher training is offered each summer for veterans and newcomers throughout the midwest with the goal of placing the Music!Words!Opera! curriculum in an increasing number of schools and positioning St. Louis as a regional training center.
